crazyjackrt asked:
I want to find my jack russell terrier a job or something to do to nurture his natural instincts. We got a fenced yard with forest in the back that has foxes and deers with a stream near by. He is also sort of a guard dog because he barks at every strange noise especially when I am asleep. We go on long walks through a golf course and the forest. What jobs are available to me that I can give my jack russell terrier?
JAKE

JRTs do very well in agility classes! The kind of natural jobs a JRT used to be bred for are dangerous and you may lose your dog if you let him hunt.
he could be a newspaper dog.
He could be a rescue dog…they use them in showbiz because they are so smart, but you may not want to go that route…doggy celebrities get all screwed up and party too much…teehee hee.
They are so smart aren’t they! My mom used to have one which I could not stand…the thing never sat still. I love to watch them use their paws by hand. My neighbor has one that is probably the smartest one I have ever seen. He doesn’t like the other dog that lives with them, and tried to drown him in a pool…what dog would know to hold another dog under water!
Jack Russells were bred to de-rat chicken farms. Their natural calling is as a working, go-to-ground dog. They have an inate desire to be active so it’s important that you give your dog plenty of activity. Otherwise, they will be frustrated and have a tendency to chew.
Some of the ways you can do this is to join a local group of serious JR owners who get together regularly to train their dogs in go-to-ground (chasing quarry in holes-this is not to kill the quarry, but to simply train the dog in what they do best). You can also train the dog in obedience, steeple chase and obstacle courses. I will say that terriers in general have a mind of their own and it’s good to start early so they don’t figure out how much they can get away with.
You can have a ton of fun with this energetic and lovable dog.
Hmm.. those dogs are smart enough that you could give him a job pinch hitting for you on Yahoo Answers. Seriously, though, you might have him “fetch a stick” when you go for a walk. I have a Blue Heeler but no cattle to herd and she takes her stick fetching very seriously. Make him bring your your boots, coat, hat, gloves as well before you go for the walk. (Ours does this.) I’ve heard some of these smart dogs will even gather up the laundry. They like the responsibility of tasks so giving him some will make for a happy dog.
