Forest Walks
Chelsea asked:

last year in school my geography teacher told us about the walking tree. Everyone found it funny because we dont believe there is such thing as a walking tree. anyway
she said its in the tropical rainforest and it doesnt get up and walk it just moves from one place to the next but it takes years 2 move. Its not because the earth is moving because all the other tree’s stay in the same place, so what is it? is there such thing as a walking tree in the rainforest or was she making it up 2 get our attention?
thanks

    you know what I mean?

Yes, there actually is such a thing as a “walking tree,” found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Known as Socratea exorrhiza, they grow new roots towards sunlight and can shift up to a meter per year.

Yes I’ve seen them in Belize. Here’s some random pictures:

The tree doesn’t walk – it doesn’t have feet. But they are called this because they do move. They live near rivers and in mangrove swamps. The root structure is above ground and acts like straws. Every so often it will lay new roots on the water side of the tree and the roots on the non-water side die off so it essentially crawls as the water source meanders.
