Forest Walks
chicagogurl8 asked:

My younger brother has had eczema since he was born. He has never been bitten by a mosquito in his entire life. I have always wondered if there is a connection between these two facts. There doesn’t seem to be anything else about him that would cause this. He could walk through a forest with me (teenage girl), his cousin (adult male), and 5 of his friends (who are male and about the same age, weight, height, etc), and he is the only one who won’t be bitten. To other eczema sufferers: How often are you bitten by mosquitos?

Would be harder for mosquitoes to smell dry (eczematous) skin, no?

No, eczema is a manifestation of atopy… Atopy is hypersensitivity and you can find that anywhere within the body, like on the skin, or in the nose, airways or whatever. It’s just that there are things in the atmosphere that people are supposed to be able to coexist with, and instead of this happening, in some people the body tries to fight against it. Eczema has to do with allergy, you can say, and allergies are shown in different ways. Allergies have to do with genetics, and basically if there are other people in your family that have allergies, then he’s likely to have them too. However, how each person shows the allergy would depend on the person himself.

i have had eczema my whole life and i too am almost never effected by mosquitoes. i will be outside at bbqs or with friends everyone will be eaten alive and i will have not a single mark. i have noticed mosquitoes land on me but don’t actually bite but i am not sure if this has to do with eczema or maybe your cousin falls into a group of people who merely do not react to mosquito bites, most people get large itchy bumps because either the nose of the mosquito broke off inside or they are allergic to the chemical they leach into you.
