Forest Walks
Lolita Lola asked:

Short story, poems, novels. Anything that makes you want to listen to Era and imagine a vampire walking through a dark forest covered in blood.
A frightening, chilly, and just simply freaky story. One that will make you think, or at least make you not want to go to bed. Best would be old folk-tales. Links, stories in the answers, recommendations, anything. Thanks for your help in advance.

“The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs. It’s perfect for what you are wanting.

Hmm. I can’t pick just one. Try checking out “The Worlds Best Fantasy and Horror” anthologies. The early editions are edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. The later editions are edited by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link, and Gavin J. Grant.

Also, you might want to check out shadowunit.org. It’s not vampire-esque, but there are certainly some gruesome and disturbing vignettes. Here is a good place to start:

It is a fictional TV show that exists only on the internet; the writers have created “episodes” in the form of short stories. There are also “deleted scenes”, and a novel length “Season Finale.” It was created by Emma Bull; her co-authors are Elizabeth Bear, Amanda Downum, Sara Monette, and Will Shetterly. The upcoming season will also feature Leah Bobet and Holly Black. Good times!!!!!
